Austin Economy
Sep 21, 2008 | 5:24 PM PST
Category:
News
The economy is really out of control, esp. with the recent government bailout and the mortage crisis. It does not surprise me that the unemployment rate here in Austin is at 4.5 %. A year ago it was 3.7% From what I have read Austin doing okay, considering Texas itself is at 5.1% and the United States is at 6.1% I know several people out of work and I know that several companies had serious layoffs, with still more to come. Last week I heard an economist on the radio and he said that the country was on the verge of recovering from this whole mess. I would like to hope that is true, but I myself think this is just the tip of the iceburg.
Man Gets 35 Years For DWI'S

News
We all know that Williamson County is tough on crime. Judge Ken Anderson handed Jimmy Barnard of Taylor a 35 year prison sentence for his 7th DWI. I don't know if this is too harsh or too weak, considering a few years ago a man got life for habitual burgularies in Williamson County. Barnard will not be eligible for parole until his serves 8 years of his sentence. Hopefully he can get some help, at least the streets will be safe from him.
3% IS A JOKE

Are you kidding me? 3% pay raise for teachers. That is what the A.S.I.D school board is proposing. The teachers union is only asking for 5%. I think it is absolutley rediculous that the teachers in the Austin area are not getting paid more than what they are. Raises for teachers in the area, are a long time coming. 5% ? Give them 15 or 20 %. It is sad that the board only offered 3%, well I guess the educators will be able to fill up their gas tank and maybe get a sandwich with this raise. HOW ABOUT CUTTING THE SUPERINTENDANTS SALERY ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Waller Creek

I am glad to see that the City of Austin is cleaning up the Waller Creek area. I say it is about time. With it being right in the downtown area it is hard to over look. I have always thought that it can be a very beautiful part of the city, if some effort was put into it. I applaud the city for their work, and Fox 7 for putting the story on the news. I hope the city will concentrate their efforts in and around the Riverside area near the lake as well.
Trucks For Sale!

Category:
News
Has anyone noticed this or is it just me? I have seen alot of trucks in peoples yards with for sale signs on them. It looks as if drivers are trying to get rid of these gas guzzlers. I know someone that bought a truck in August and now they turned around and bought a car because of the price of gas.
I know that car dealerships have had a drop in sales, and I have not seen a ton of dealership ads on T.V. It obvious that the high gas prices are taking a toll on a lot of people. I am noticing alot more people on buses and more people are using car pool programs.
Metal Thieves

News
It seems like everytime I turn around, I am hearing about another copper or metal heist. It is happening all over the country from what I am told. Metal is being stolen from electric plants, churches, schools and from any place where thieves think they can get away with it.
First off I think that it is ridiculous that people are stealing manhole covers. How is it that metal recycling centers are excepting them. How is it that thieves are taking metal from electric plants to be recycled. I have never done this, but I would think that it might be obvious to spot electrical plant parts.
It is sad that people have stooped so low. If authorities are unable to get the metal crooks themselves, they need to start cracking down on the buyers at the recycling centers. For this to go on as long as it has, is pathetic!

Military Changes Their UFO Story
Jan 24, 2008 | 5:50 PM PST
Category:
News
I find it strange that the military denied reports of any of their aircrafts were in the area where the UFO's were spotted. At first they were saying it was probably an illusion caused by two commerical planes and the setting sun. Now 2 weeks later, they are coming back and saying they did have some of their planes in the air that night.
I don't know if the government is hiding something from us or if they want they don't want to except new information, but if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it's a duck.
Eight Liner Machines
Jan 23, 2008 | 4:21 PM PST
Category:
News
Investigators seized 6 eight liner machines from a VFW Hall in Travis County. On January 17th Austin Police seized 34 more machines from a game room off of Yager Lane. It never ceases to amaze me with all the crackdowns the authorities have been doing on these kind of games in past few years, people keeping posessing these games and putting them out there for people to play and win off them. Don't people watch the news?
This Day In History
Jan 10, 2008 | 12:27 AM PST

News
I thouhgt this was interesting.
January 10th
On this day in 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet and signaling the advent of the American oil industry. The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet, flowed at an initial rate of approximately 100,000 barrels a day and took nine days to cap. Following the discovery, petroleum, which until that time had been used in the U.S. primarily as a lubricant and in kerosene for lamps, would become the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes; coal-powered forms of transportation including ships and trains would also convert to the liquid fuel.
Fake Essay For Hannah Tickets
Dec 29, 2007 | 2:50 PM PST
Category:
News
I don't know what all the craze is about Hannah Montana, but if I was a 6 year old little girl, I guess I would.
This is insane. A mother wants to take her daughter to a Hannah Montana Concert so bad that they would lie in an essay that her father died in Iraq. That's what happened in Garland Tx. The fathers information did not match the military records and the mother later admitted to the deception.
The company that ran the contest decided not to give the tickets to the girl. I think they did the right thing and should give the tckets to another contestant. What do you think? Shoud the mother and the child be punished?
Prostitution Arrest
Dec 29, 2007 | 2:07 PM PST
Category:
News
I was reading the story about the prostitution arrest in Williamson County. A 17 year old went on Craigslist and sought out a prostitute. The next day the woman and two others came to his house, when he didn't pay, they did'nt leave and he then called police.
I have a feeling that this may keep Williamson County or any county for that matter very busy. Craigslist is a good resource if your looking for something, but it has gotten out of hand and practices like this are becoming the norm. You can find a lot of crazy stuff on Craigslist and this proves it. I'm sure the police are very aware of Craigslist, it would surprise me if they weren't.
In all they ended up arresting 6 people, but not the 17 year old. He got the ball rolling. Do you think he should be punished?
Meth Kids
Dec 19, 2007 | 10:46 PM PST
Category:
News
I have to admit I was pretty shocked after I saw Arezow's story about the kids who were removed by CPS because they tested positive for meth. That just blows me away. I have heard and seen some crazy stuff, but it is hard to believe that the parents here can be that irresponsible and just plain stupid. I hope CPS finds these children a safe home, because these parents should not be allowed to care for children.
