Drunk driving is an epidemic in this country. And yet, beer advertising is rampant throughout television. Ironically, rarely are drunk drivers shown on television programs. Also ironically, there is a push to lower the drinking age.

Unplanned pregnancies are rampant in this country among our youth. And yet, there is no advertisiing of condoms on television. Ironically, sex is commonplace in both television advertising and on the shows themselves. Also ironically, there is a push to include condoms in middle schools.

Why is that?

O what a world...

I was listening to KLBJ yesterday and the DJ was recommending that Trojan Condoms advertise on students book covers. The state mandates that all books must be covered and that they spend $100,000 (not sure on that last number, I think it was around that figure) on providing schools with book covers. Here is an idea. Go into your closet. Get out a roll of Christmas paper. Cover your own damn books.

As far as drunk driving is concerned. I myself was a complete idiot back in my college days. I admit to driving under the influence more than a handful of times. I drank illegally under age and I drove illegally under the influence. Why? Because I was a complete idiot back in college.

I have got a idea to fix this whole drunk driving thing. 1 strike and you are out. You get caught just once drinking and driving you loose your driving privileges for your whole life. Do that and have police officers who are downtown on a regular basis anyway, wearing street cloths, to follow drunky Magoo to their car and bust them the second the key hits the ignition.

DUI generates a lot of money for a lot of people. The lawyers get a bundle for representing you in court. If you can't hire a lawyer your fine will be very expensive. The judge will sentence you to "Drunk school" I understand that is pretty expensive. If no one drove under the influence the money would have to come from other sources like more property tax.

You stop DUI by confinscating the car being used as soon as the driver is found guilty. I don't care if it is his car, his parents car, his pastor's car. You just confinscate it and auction it off. Period.

Sex sells: You can't name a product on TV that does not promote your sex life. Right now it is very fashionable to be pregnant. You can't dial up MYFoxAustin without seeing some Hollywood bimbo showing her "Baby bump"..

I don't drink three days before I drive and I sure as heck ain't gonna get pregnant. It's your problem, deal with it.

The only way to stop drunk driving is to create either urban areas where people can walk to bars and then back home as is the case in many larger cities.

OR...

Your create a reliable system of mass transit late at night. People are going to continue to drink, and no matter what the punishment is, it won't deter drunk driving because most people that drive drunk do not realize at the time that they are, IN FACT, drunk. So they are not worried about punishments because they think they are sober, or at least not .08 drunk.

It has always been proposed that "education" is the key to these problems. We'll, we've been "educating" for 50 years and it hasn't worked. Perhaps the reason is that mankind has, since the beginning of time, found means to alter their reality and there isn't a whole lot we'll ever be able to do about it. So I guess the problem is that we still don't know how to raise children to be well-adjusted, educated and thoughtful adults. And I don't think that's going to change anytime soon. About the only benefit that we can get out of it all is the economic and tax boost from the sale of alcohol. Therefore, we promote the advertising of alcohol. You wouldn't consider cutting off that source of revenue from Congress would you? How would they eat? God forbid that happen! :)
