Right now it's simply too easy to pile on Cedric Benson and Roger Clemens.   They both had the world at their feet... but both tarnished their respective reputations by continually making poor choices.

As we all shake our heads in bewilderment... is this really that hard to figure out?

Tragically, like many of America's elite athletes, Ced and the Rocket both grew up kings of their respective sports... and thus, were placed on thrones at a very early age.  In a country that loves/craves/needs its entertainment... star athletes hear what they want to hear all the time... get what they want all the time... and eventually begin existing in a much different orbit than the majority of us.

Why wouldn't Clemens think he could get away with different levels of cheating?

Why should Benson politely deal with an aqua security guard who was buzz-killing his boat party?

If I grew up never hearing the word "no"... and never had to be accountable for my actions.. I'd probably make some pretty bad decisions too.  Rabid sports fans will be the first to tear these guys up for being "above the law'... even though these same fans help make those athletes feel "untouchable".

Am I a Clemens apologist?  No way.  Do I agree with Benson's off-field antics?  Of course not.   But I'm not baffled by their actions either... and I won't be surprised when the next superstar in ANY arena lets us down again.

If you remember a few years ago when Cedric played in Austin, he broke down somebody's door to get his plasma tv back. He obviously feels he can do whatever he wants. It's a shame, but dosn't surprise me.

Here is the solution to any "disillustionment" for kids and sports stars.

I raise my kids to enjoy sports but NOT to see ANY sports star as a "Hero."

People who are dismayed at Roger "the Doger" Clemens because he is a "hero' to their kids need to raise them better.

Q: How is throwing a baseball with skil "heroic?"

A: It is not.

You know what the problem is? UT babying their athletes....HAHA, only kidding!! (kind of). Seriously though, anytime you have situations where family and "friends" stop looking at these athletes as family and friends and start looking at them as investments, you can expect this kind of behavior. As Dennis touched on, nobody close to these prodigies-turned-millionaires will ever tell them "no" or "don't" for fear that they'll get booted off their gravy train.

As a sports fan, there are a few things I hate to see get lost in all of this. One, the fact that athletes like Clemens and Benson have worked their tails off to become the athletes they are, two, the fact that most athletes like Clemens and Benson have used their fame to touch many peoples lives in a positive way, and three, the people that are attacking these athletes and trying to bring them down aren't usually squeeky clean either. But when you repeatedly lie to the public about your past, when "doing time" means a pit stop at the jail then telling cameramen "you're going to regret this" instead of keeping your mouth shut and hanging your head in humility, the positives get overshadowed. And why is that? No, not because of the media, but because too many friends, fam, gravy trainers, handlers, you name it, just try to focus on the positives while not facing and fixing the negatives.

Amen Brer, as Charles Barkley said many years ago: "I'm not a role model, parents are role models".

Hey, count me as one of the people that think Cedric is innocent based on the info I have. So I am more disappointed in the LCRA boat cops for using unnecessary force. It is just a product of our cynical society that we just assume the worst of people like Cedric Benson without waiting to see the facts.

Brer: I wish more parents shared your perspective. "Hero worship" is a slippery slope.

ClifT: Great point on the positive/negative issue. I'm a glass half-full type.. but not to the point of ignoring the other half of the glass.

MSpurl: We're not only a cynical society... but we're also an impatient one with a 24-hour news cycle! Because of that, the days of "waiting to see the facts" are long gone. Unfortunately, "trial by media" is here to stay.

Maybe one day when we're communist, instead of the 24-hour news cycle, we'll only have 1 channel and it'll be run by the govt., then we can wait for the facts on Cedric.

One government-run channel?
Hope not.
TV sports jobs would be tough to find!

Dennis, Mike, Cliff....is the internet great. Even though we office within earshot of each other, thanks to modern tech., we never have to actually speak to each other!

ISSUE RESOVLED. CASE CLOSED!

This just came off the wire and should settle this thread once and for all.

Roger Clemens just testified to Congress UNDER OATH that Benson was in fact NOT DRINKING on his boat. So that should put this post to bed once and for all. Glad Rog cleared that up for us.

Nice.

I hear Bonds backed up Clemens' story as well.

I also understand Miguel Tejada was charged with Minor in Posession... until he confessed he really wasn't 17.

Be sure to listen for "de la Pick'ems" on 101X FM (every Friday morning with hip DJs Jason and Deb). I'll also try to post my football picks here Friday afternoons... along with some random sports takes.
