As tax season approaches, the IRS is reporting that more and more illegal immigrants are coming forward to pay taxes.  The immigrants say they hope paying taxes will help them achieve legal status as they work to gain citizenship.  The IRS says they don't inquire about a person immigration status nor do they share information with other federal agencies like homeland security.  The IRS estimates illegal immigrants pay billions into the system each year.  Critics say it's not a good Idea, but I think I say if you want to pay, pay.  What do you think?

Educate me! How can they file? Do they have a SSN or other identification number? I need an SSN to file.

I believe that a guest worker program is the key to solving illegal immigration. But we must be able to track guest workers in this country. If they are filing, the documentation is there to show (1) they are here and (2) they are working. In my view we should be offering incentives for filing and entering the INS data base as a guest worker. The INS should not be dreaded for hard working, law abiding immigrants.

Over time a guest worker program would bring in documented workers to this country. This competition for jobs would encourage others already in this country to enter this program. In my view this is all that is needed to start the ball rolling.

The incentive should not be a guarantee of automatic citizenship but competition and hard work that applies towards eventual citizenship.

To me there are simple, common sense solutions to problems of illegal immigration including: border security, tracking systems, employer participation, incentives and participation of the Hispanic American community. I don't think we can effectively do every thing at once. The "comprehensive solution" should be a process that is phased in over time. I think our politicians realize this and are proceeding down this road.
