Tropical Storm Edouard formed rather quickly in the northern Gulf today. As of 5pm today, the winds were up to 45mph, moving slowly west.
Most of our computer forecast models and the National Hurricane Center believe that Edouard will strengthen over the Gulf on Monday, and by Tuesday morning, it's approaching the upper Texas coast, possibly near Galveston. At this point, Edouard is forecast to be a strong tropical storm, but may have winds gusting over hurricane force. It's not out of the question, that like Dolly, Edouard could briefly become a minimal hurricane before making landfall!
From the coast, Edouard should weaken over land, but could dump over four inches of rain in the Houston/Galveston area. He is forecast to track right over Central Texas Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. On this track, areas around Austin and eastward could see as much as two inches of rain, with lower totals westward into the Hill Country. This doesn't look to be a drought-buster, but this could be the best and most widespread rain we have seen in a very long time.
Beyond Wednesday, Edouard is dying in West Texas and our rain chances come to an end. Expect hot and dry weather for the rest of the week into the weekend.
