Ok.. After weeks of doing the more intense workouts of running my heel spurs or plantar fasciitis is back.  I wake up not shuffling.. but hopping around on one foot in major pain.  I have had this in the past and the ONLY treatment that ever worked was doing yoga 3 days a week.  My yoga hasnt been as consistent lately and i think i am paying for it now.  However.. this doesn't mean i quit running.  We are trying a new strategy so i dont run every day.  We are going to start incorporating cycling and swimming to my workout.

I hope as i treat my injury i can give out very helpful information to others struggling with injuries.   It is so easy just to quit and say that's it.  But that's not the answer.

Stay tuned as we profile the sports medicine doctor who will be treating me and what he says about other injuries many of us get -- in our quest to get fit and stay fit.

Hopefully you watched today's Health Edge-- Fox 7 Fitness Series where i took my workout to the next level... by working out with a group of seasoned runners. Among the group.. The Governor.  His mission is the same as mine.. to help others get fit and to prove that no matter how busy we all are.. you really need to squeeze in time into your schedule for your overall health. It will help you in the long run.

You m ay have noticed our routines seem very similiar.. you have seen us do the drills.. like skipping, cross overs, running backwards etc.. but each time we take it to a new place.  One day its a hill.. the next time we head to a track and do circuit training with our drills.  You too can do these workouts at home.  Cheers to your health!

Just a reminder -- If you didnt' watch the last Health Edge story.. breaking down my first workout with RunTex Founder Paul Carrozza... check it out.  Its right here on the web under our health tab.  You will see the drills Paul put me through to help me put my endurance to the test.

If you don't have time to watch.. the key is balacing your workouts. If you are going to run.. which shortens the muscles. Do yoga and other cross training to lengthen your muscles.  We choose this time to do drills.. followed by pull ups.. push ups and sit ups.  A quick workout.. but one you can use when your schedule is busy and you don't have time for a long cardio day.

Give it a shot.... it can help your heart... and your total both health.

So far my workouts are going great.  Tomorrow at 5p you will see Paul take me on my first official workout with him at Austin High.  You will see the drills he puts me through including pull ups.. which i seemed to struggle on.  What i am really learning is the power of the drills.  I have been running -- or jogging-- for most of my life and never did drills.  They really make a difference.  Tune in at 5p and see what drills he puts me through and how they can help you too.

Keep in mind.. this journey of mine to get really fit started to just lean out and lose weight -- now it is about total body health. Especially after gettting that CT scan of my heart.  If you saw the story you heard the doctor say my heart is clear of plaque but that's only a 5-7 year warranty.  My sister already had build up and my dad-- whom i call Papi also has build up.  So i encourage everyone to go out and get tested-- and get on the road to a healthier you. :)

Well I started my training with who I call the Godfather of local running.. Runtex founder Paul Carrozza and love it.  But the goal is not just for me to improve my fitness level but to help others get fit.  Trainers are so expensive these days and who has extra money with these gas prices... so i am putting myself out there to hopefully help you get fit at home.

Why did i get started on yet another fitness adventure?  Working out and eating right has always been a part of my life... but since taking part in the Heart Study with renouned cardiologists at Atlanta's Piedmont hospital to look at heart disease among healthy families.. I am even more passionate about good health.

I was upset to find out that despite my papi's triple bypass -- he still has calcium build up in his arteries. Lots of it.  We found that in a CT Scan.  My sister.. has a potential blockage and she is only 37.  I however am fine.. so far.. but they said my clean bill of health as far as my heart is only a 5-7 year warranty.

So .. stay tuned.. once i get more details of my workout i will pass them along to you.  The key is just to get off the couch and get started .  Tomorrow we show you about picking the right shoe to help you put your best foot forward and stick to your workout plan.

Gas prices are up. Grocery prices are up too.  Cutting coupons can help you save a few dollars.. but can you find coupons that are for foods that are good for you?

I find very very few coupons for healthy items.  If you are a coupon expert or know an expert we want to talk to you.  Please tell us how you are cutting costs and still eating healthy.  It is a debate in our newsroom each day.. and we are trying to find a solution.

Anyone tried the master cleanse? We have a few people in the newsroom doing it.. but i am curious to hear feedback from others.  I personally worry that going without food for that long (10 days) is not safe.. and some in the health community have said that too. But others say its good for your body.  However, i am a big advocate of people getting rid of toxins in their bodies.. because so many people make such poor food choices.

Any feedback ? Thoughts?

Looking to bridge the gap between existing pilates and the fitness world... Peak Pilates came out with this amazing pilates chair!  Its called the MVe chair.  If you are not into pilates.. you might change your mind after trying this.  I spent my entire weekend working out ... at this pilates seminar where trainers from all over the world got a chance to workout using the new chair and existing reformer bed.. and what an amazing weekend.  I love to workout anyway.. so i had fun working out hours and hours each day.  But this chair really adds to the workout.  If you have a chance to read up on this chair.. take a look.  If you find a gym using it.. give it a shot. You will be really doing your body good.    I can't wait until all austin gyms have them in place so others get a shot to try them out.  I am ready to buy one of my own.. but they are expensive. They run about $699 each.

I do not feel sorry for Eliot Spitzer.. i dont think many do.  But i do feel very SORRY for his wife and kids.  This is not just a horrible break down in their marriage but Spitzer took part in prostitution which is linked to crime.  Even worse.. he did this over possibly the past 10 years.  What kind of pain is his poor wife in?  But then again.. she is not the first woman to go through an affair in the public eye. And as the media pointed out today.. it seems in every case women stand by their men.  I am sure  there was a back door deal she made with him.. perhaps.. i'll stand by your side at this  press conference but here's what you are giving me financially.  But then again... who are we to say what goes on in a marriage.. these women are all very bright women... and yet in so many cases.. the women stand there hurt.. wounded.. but they are there.

I never really paid such close attention to the latest news in Autism .. treatment and what families are going through until my own niece was diagnosed.  I am sorry I didn't.  There is so much to this disease.  It is truly at epidemic levels.  25 years ago.. 1 in 10,000 kids was diagnosed.  Now.. its 1 in 150.  Since the problem is not just here in the US .. its worldwide... some question whether vaccines could be causing the problem. Not that vaccines are bad.. but for these kids who have problems with their immune system perhaps the vaccine affects them neurologically.  We never thought we would hear the day the government come out and say.. yes there IS a possible connection. But just 2 days ago.. it did. Actually.. the government settled with a family of an autistic kid after they filed a complaint with the vaccine injury compensation fund.  Hopefully this latest news will lay the groundwork of help to come for these kids and families affected.

Well so far.. super Tuesday two.. turning out to be as exciting as expected.  We didn't know Huckabee would drop out of the race tonight.  Many people wanted him to drop out sooner and it seemed he was not going to do this until at least tomorrow. As for the democrats..   We knew that Hillary would do well in Ohio and was ahead in the polls... but had no idea she would win by such a large margin as she did there. Texas at this point as I type.. Texas too close to call. But we are watching closely.

I applaud all Huckabee for trying so hard. Now the republicans can focus on the race ahead.. and hopefully soon the democrats can do the same. Its is time to narrow this race down on both sides.   But even after tonight.. it just looks like it will be a 3 person race... Because Barack will likely have the same delegate lead as he went into this race with.

Such sad news to hear that home sales are at a record low and foreclosures at a high.  In fact, I heard in North Texas one realtor has a bus that takes people on a tour of foreclosed homes to help sell them.  I know its a business but its so sad to hear about so many people losing their homes.  When I moved here to Austin.. it took me nearly 8 months to sell my house and I had to pay when i closed on it.  I cried and thought it was the end of the world but then realized how very blessed I am because at least It didnt get to the point to where i lost my house.  It was not easy paying 2 house payments and very stressful.. but again I am so lucky.  My heart goes out to others struggling to get their homes sold.

It is so great to hear and feel the excitement leading up to the elections.  No matter what candidate you support... you have to admit it is great to see and hear so many people take such an active role in who will be our next leader.  I love seeing this. As a cuban-american it touches my heart... because we are so fortunate here.  Think about those living under a communist regime like Cuba who have no say who will lead them and they go to work everyday working for Castro.. well now his brother.  You have doctors driving taxis because they make more money... there is no such thing as starting your own business, you are told when to go out to the streets to rally around the leader or dictator i should say... whom you really dont support., you wait in line for food and barely get enough to feed your family... i could go on and on.  All i say... is i feel very blessed to be an American and live in this country.  Get out the vote.. no matter whom you vote for.

What is going on in our country that we keep hearing these stories time and time again about gunmen opening fire on school campuses.  It is heartbreaking to think that students these days have to think about not just what their professor is saying but if someone is going to show up in their classroom and open fire.  I can't imagine what these students are thinking each day when they go to class no matter what university they go to.  When I was in college at the Univ. of Georgia.. that was certainly not on my mind.  I wish there was something to do to make schools safer!!

Ok... i am eating my words about eating healthy and not getting the flu.  YES... one day after we air my story on boosting your immune system... and drinking something called kombucha that has culture floating around in it.. .i get the FLU!  And oh yeah.. one week after i eat grass from a pasture where grass-fed beef roam... i got sick. But despite what everyone in the newsroom is teasing me about..  the grass i ate came from a pasture where the steer had not visited yet!  So no cow patties.. despite what Scott Fisher believes.  That grass was clean and tasted good.

Anyway... The funny part is .. i did get the flu when my boosting immune system story aired or around that time.  I was actually feeling very sick as i was introducing my story.  I can only laugh because i know it just doesn't add up.  Everyone in the newsroom is having fun teasing me.  No i didnt' get the flu shot.  I don't get them.. but this one i couldnt fight just on my healthy diet and herbal remedies.  Now i must admit.. since i have changed my diet and workout and life.. i am sick less often and so many other health issues i dealt with in years past have but disappeared.

But yes.. i eat my words.. and that flu was violent!  It is still running through out fox station and so many other businesses. Beware if you get it.. you will be out of work for a few days.  Stay healthy!
