As of this writing...Mother's Day 2008, I find myself looking at a country in the midst of a crisis. Not just looking at it, but living in it, as well. Seems every day, there is some evidence of this country's downward spiral. Higher oil prices, higher food prices, declining real-estate market, failing financial corproations, record numbers of forclosed mortgages, new scandals uncovered in our government and private corporations, new epidemics of various drug-resistant diseases, more crime, more violence, more tolerance for what used to be considered intolerable behavior, more wars, more poverty, more homelessness, more welfare recipients, more unwed mothers, more prisons and more prisoners, and the list of negatives just keeps getting longer and meaner. Were it not for my steadfast faith in God, I would have no choice, as a reasonably educated adult, but to be scared to death by what I am witnessing in this country and around the world on a daily, and sometimes an hourly basis. The perplexities that face this country alone are staggering. The plight of the world as a whole is cause for concern of its' own. However, we, as Americans, have a history of living in a country that has received blessings far and above those bestowed upon any other country in the world in terms of personal freedoms, boundless opportunities, self-sufficiency and victories over those who would have done harm to us and our way of life, dating up to and including the second world-war. That's when the U.S., as a country, began to take a downward turn that has increased in scope and speed to this very day.

History books prove it...I'm not just making this stuff up. We were successful in world-war 2 and fought to a draw in Korea. We got our butts handed to us on the way out of Vietnam and have suffered one defeat and one embarrassment after another up to and including the present day (Mogadishu, Panama, etc.). And here we are, no closer to bringing our troops home from a futile conflict, started by hatred and vengeance and perpetuated by greed, than five years ago when this sin was first committed.

Sin? What am I talking about...sin? Yup, that's exactly what I meant. You remember earlier when I mentioned my steadfast faith in God? Well, I wasn't just saying that to be cool, or witty or anything else except honest. If you can find it in yourself to be honest with yourself as you read the rest of my diatribe, maybe you'll get as clear a view as I have on the state of the world around us. Bear with me and indulge me for just a moment...

This country was founded on religious beliefs. It was founded on the belief that all men were created equal under God, and that all men had inalienable rights...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For its' first 175 years, this country and her inhabitants were bound by a very strong moral fabric. Since the 1950's and the introduction of "liberlaism" and the allowance by the general public of a "loosening" of the moral fiber that constituted that fabric, it has un-ravelled at our feet and we find ourselves with the mess we see before us as we go out our front doors each day. Mountains of "loose ends"...debt. Piles of unrecognizable things that used to be the order and peace of our daily lives. I guess I should quit trying to romanticize it and just call it for what it is...America the Beautiful...once blessed by God Almighty because we owed our very existence to His grace and sang, as a nation, His praises, has become America the Dirty...America the Down-trodden, America the Shamefull, America the Greedy...there are a thousand-and-one names for this country that better describe what it has become than "America the Beautiful". I fear that, unless there is a spiritual awakening in this country, unless the citizens of this once-great nation realize the nature of their individual and collective sins and how we have, as a country, thrown God right out the door, the only direction we can expect to head is DOWN! What else can you expect? If you call yourself a "person of faith"...moreover a Christian, can you honestly tell me that you are living to repay the debt you owe Him for the sacrifices He made for you on the Cross, or are you more concerned with making your own way in this world without seeking His Holy guidance? That's what has happened to America. We, those of faith, have sat back and allowed the forces of darkness to legislate God right out of our government. I don't know about your beliefs and unless you are a true believer in the teachings and the Word of Jesus Christ I don't really care what they are, I just know that I would rather my countrys' higher offices be staffed by men and women who bowed their heads in prayer every day, asking for the strength, courage and guidance needed to keep this country strong and free, than by someone who thought their labors didn't need to be brought before the Lord and prayed about. The history books are full-to-overflowing with the records of what has happened to this country since it lost its' moral compass. Like I said earlier...I'm not making this stuff up! Look back at history and see if you don't notice a downward trend in Americas' prosperity about the same time that morals started being relaxed and our covenant relationship with God began to be more for show amongst the self-righteous than for earnest thanksgiving and praise for what He has given us as a nation. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away...don't you see our country being slowly-but-surely taken away from us, the citizens, whose benefit and well-being was to be first consideration of our government? It proves out in the history books that while we were a good, moral, God-fearing society, we could conquer whatever challenge we, as a nation, were faced with. Now, we fear not God as a nation. We lust after the trappings of man and the gloss and glitter of the world. We forget that these things will soon come to pass, and that the one and only constant we have in our lives is Jesus Christ. We live like we have a clue what tomorrow may bring, when in point-of-fact, the best educated minds on earth can't, with any certainty or accuracy,  predict what will happen five minutes from now! Who are you kidding but yourselves if  you think that by ignoring God and His laws, things are going to turn out fine at the hands of mere men? You are witnessing evidence to the contrary every day! If you don't see it, it's because you choose not to. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just means you refuse to acknowledge it. Oh, how I don't want to be in your shoes!

I know I'm gonna get jumped on by the liberals and the athiests (no, I don't capitalize that word like the non-believers) and the devil-worshipers and by those who just don't, for whatever reason, know God and the joy that comes with that relationship. That's alright. As a Christian, I know I'm gonna get stuff hurled at me, but I can't let that keep me from telling the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts, but to know the truth is to find peace. Do you not want peace in your life? Then it's time for each and every Christian to bow your head and ask forgiveness for the sins that got us into this mess, and to ask His eternal guidance and blessings on this sin-ridden nation that we might once again find our faith in the Creator and live in accordance with His will so that this country might rise again in greatness to His Glory and His Honor.

So, you want to blame Americas' woes on somebody? Start with yourself. If you can't honestly stand in your own footprints and admit that you and your lifestyle, combined with everyone else who puts themselves first before anyone or anything else, might have something to do with the current mess we find ourselves in, then I see no hope for this country. Each and every one of us who believes that God has richly blessed this country owes it to the survival of our nation to re-kindle your relationships with the Almighty. Insist that faith be re-introduced into our government, our schools, our businesses and our daily lives. Don't attend church for appearance sake, but for the right reasons! Pray for those who lead our country to increase their faith, thereby helping to assure this countrys' survival and prosperity. Without giving thanks for blessings received and without praying for continued blessings and guidance and protection, I feel this country is on a collision course with destruction and division. I ask you to consider the Pledge of Allegiance..."One Nation, Under GOD"...and ask yourself when the last time was that you recited it. Are you starting to see what I see all-too-clearly? That seperated from God, this country is doomed to failure? If so, then I strongly urge you to go to your Master in solemn prayer and ask that He reverse the trend we see daily. As for me, I don't concern myself with tomorrow. I know that there are no certainties in life except that God loves me and Jesus Christ died on the Cross so that my worldly sins against the Heavenly Father would all be forgiven. I really hate to see my country go down the tubes like this, but I can't save it by myself. I mean, I know what's wrong with it, but my prayers alone and the fact that I try to live by His law aren't enough to save it.  So, I take comfort in the knowledge that whatever happens to this country, I am safe in Christ Jesus. I know the benefits of my relationship with Him and I also know the debt I owe Him for His sacrifices. That and only that is what keeps me from freaking out in this crazy world. I'm 51 years old and until I asked Jesus into my heart, I lived a lonely, scary and often-times very uncertain life. That is no longer the case, and I know by what I am feeling as an individual that this same salvation can be had as a nation. But it's not going to happen until the believers of the Son of Rightesousness come together in His name to reclaim what He has given to us. That which has slowly and carefully been slipped from our grasp by the forces of darkness. That being our beloved America the Beautiful. Christians Unite! Take back our country in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit! Put God in first place in this country and He will put this country in first place in the world! Shut God out and He will throw us to the wolves! The handwriting is on the wall...the next move is yours!!

Wow.
Did you say you were a Christian?
"I don't know about your beliefs and unless you are a true believer in the teachings and the Word of Jesus Christ I don't really care what they are."

Okay.

Texasson, are you saying that God blessed America in the 1700s for enslaving Africans?
We killed a mess of Indians and Mexicans too.

Dont' get me wrong. I love the US but your rant is a little slighted.

I knew I'd get grief for telling the truth.
1. A Christian holds Christianity dear and has no thoughts of other FALSE religions.
2. Panama was a flop that did nothing but serve the interests of those who backed Noriega for years, then were given the shaft...revenge.
3. God blessed the Israelites in order for them to vanquish the Armelites and various others who opressed them. Slaves were of the norm in Biblical times, as were servants, concubines, etc.
4. Read Your BIBLE!!!

After re-reading your comments, I can only respond by saying that you focused on the crumbs instead of the meal. Sure, you can find fault with anything said by humans. That's my whole point. We, as a once-God-fearing nation, have turned our ear toward men instead of bowing our heads and listening to the still, small voice of God speaking to our hearts. Since we give our glory and praise to men instead of God, He turns His face from us and hears us not! Check out the sink-holes and the tornadoes and the floods and the earthquakes and all the other natural disasters occurring at a record rate. Then look at the economy. Then look at your "choices" for President. Then, just look around...Do you see the mess I'm talking about, or are you really that snow-blind that you can no longer discern right from wrong? Open You Eyes!! Then open your heart to God and let Him open your mind!

Wow a lot to read forgive me if I respond incorrectly to anything you might have said because I read fast. First let me say your right about allowing God into our hearts it is a must because only then can we see the things to come, and rejoice knowing the time for eternal life is truly coming we must put aside all that is evil and protect all that is not. We should be strong in the Lord and do all we can to keep God’s word strong we are his soldiers and by design Gods word will vanquish if we don’t do something to keep Gods word alive, this starts with us and all else matters so little because we are so small in comparison to all this life is.

Don't read 'em and you won't be offended. I'm not concerned with the displeasures of a heathen. If you ever decide that you aren't the smartest person on the planet, let me know. You might be an interesting person to talk to. But not 'til then, O.K.?

It's hard not to read your dogma when you put it into your COMMENTS on others' blogs. It's interesting to me that people show their lack of intellect when spouting off nonsense like this. You talk of being a "Man of God", then curse in the same comments. Holy and righteous - yeah, sure. Judge not and ye shall not be judged. Every idol word that you utter, you shall give an account of in the day of judgement.

Texasson - good to see you care about the USA, and I respect anyone's right to believe or not believe however they choose. I have no desire to attack your faith or religion. However, on history....well, frankly, your knowledge of American history is sometimes non-existent, sometimes horrendous. Sorry, but I have to correct the facts. You're free to believe that our problems are the result of moral decay/lack of faith, but I have to point out what the history books say.

This will be multiple comments due to length limit, or see the full response on my blog here:

ITEM #1 - SUMMARY OF YOUR ARGUMENTS
As I understand it, your argument consists of the following points (summarized):
1.1 - Pre-WWII America was blessed with success economically, in war, personal freedoms, etc.
1.2 - We were also bound by a strong moral fabric during that time period.
1.3 - America was founded on religious beliefs & those guided us for 175 years.
2.1 - Post-WWII America has been on the decline, economically, losing wars, mounting debt, etc.
2.2 - In this period we're in moral decay.
2.3 - America's downward spiral is increasing in speed & scope daily, since WWII.
3.1 - America's success was due to morals & faith, it's decline is due to weak morals & lack of faith.

Given the 24hr news it's easy to think things are bad, getting worse, and doing it more quickly daily. But, the facts don't bear it out. I do agree that the yr 2000 to now has seen America descend very quickly economically, environmentally, and with our foreign policy and standing in the world, but, that's only a few years, not back to WWII. We have had periods of good times & prosperity and periods of bad times and decline, throughout our history, including both pre & post WWII.

Crime:
Crime rates did indeeed increase drastically in the 60's/early 70's. But, it declined significantly in the 90's. However, in the 90's the rate began a large & steady decline. We haven't been this low since the mid-60's. It dropped about 35% in the 1990's alone. Increased drug law & enforcement post 1960 is responsible for a lot of the rate increase (as is urbanization) in 1800's & early 1900's, 'strong moral fabric' time, drugs were often legal, opium use was prevalent. Also, the US has not been 'blessed' with low crime (preWWII or now) - we have higher rates than most European countries, for example. Finally, the crime rate has been high pre-WWII as well. For example, Chicago had 10 murders per 100,000 people in 1916 and today it's 15 per 100,000; New York is 7 per 100,000. Again, your facts both now and pre-WWII are inaccurate.
Errors:
- No negative trend (it's a positive trend since 1992).
- Pre-WWII also has had times of high crime rates.
- Many countries enjoy less crime than us (both pre & post WWII).

Public debt:
We've had periods of large government debt both before and after WWII. They are easily identified as to the timeframe and cause:
- 1790's, due to borrowing for Revolutionary War
- Mid-1800's, civil war.
- late 1910's, WWI
- 1930's, Roosevelt spending to get us out of Depression & also military buildup & lend-lease to England.
- 1940's, massive debt buildup for WWII.
- 1950->1980, positive trned, paying off WWII debt entirely (this is during our period of decline, according to you)
- 1980's, this is the main current problem - massive debt buildup under Reagan due, almost entirely, to huge tax cuts -- note these words are not mine, they're in Pres. Bushs's 2006 Budget - http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2006/pdf/hist.pd
f
- 1990's -- we actually reduced debt here, a positive trend.
- 2000's, this will be the 2nd big runup of debt, under Bush. Again, due primarily to tax cuts with no spending cuts. Secondarily, Iraq war, two large "economic incentive" packages, and Katrina. Again, a downward 2000's trend, but not back to WWII.

Oil:
Prices are high now, but they were also very high in the 1970's, and low in the 80's & 90's. In the '70s things were even worse than now - there were oil embargos in 73 & 79, gas lines, etc. Clearly worse than in the 1900's when oil first took the stage, but, given the 80s/90s, clearly not a downward spiral that is increasing in speed.
Errors:
- No clear negative trend (varies);
- issue is largely irrelevant pre-1950 since oil supply was a non-issue for us;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_energy_crisis

Jobs:
Unemployment, has gone up a bit in 2008, though still low/avg historically. It has been very bad in the past, including pre-WWII. Depression in 1930's - terrible time for us - poverty, hunger, homelessness, suicide, massive unemployment, all rampant for a decade -- and during your described period of moral fortitude. There was another in 1890's (unemployment was 18.4%). Or, the Industrial Revolution of the late 1800's, sweatshops employing men/women/kids for pennies, no benefits, dangerous workplaces, no rights, violent crackdowns, etc.
Errors:
- PreWWII has several job/unemployment times, including worst time (by far).
- Current unemployment rate is not bad.
- No clear negative trend (varies all over)

Welfare (TANF):
Was reformed in the 90's, to limit it's long-term usage/abuse, while also improving it's ability to get people back into the workforce. Since the 90's welfare usage has decreased in real numbers and in length of usage, back-to-work rates among recipients have significantly increased, etc.
Errors:
No negative trend, instead positive trend for the last 15 years.
Pre-1950 is not valid for welfare so comparisons on usage can only be made in this 'moral era'

Pledge of Allegiance:
The words 'Under God' were put in there during the 50's (the period of downward spiraling in your view), under Eisenhower.

Economy:
During your preWWII era, America was not nearly as rosy as you think. We often had financial panics & depressions (w/stock crashs, suicides, starvation, unemployment):
panics 1819, 1837, 1857,
1873-1878 depression, stock market shut down for 10 days
1893 panic caused 2nd worst depression, 18.4% unemployment

Well I'm getting tired of typing so let me wrap this up.....
Morality -- We are far more moral now than we were in our early years. We threw people into prison who couldn't pay their debts, including a signer of the Declaration of Independence. We had slaves, we had indentured servants. We broke tens of treaties with the Indians and basically committed a genocide against them. Prior to Roosevelt's time, there were no workplace standards, you had sweatshops, there was little in the way of financial controls on the economy, etc. Women couldn't vote for much of your so-called strong moral fabric timeframe.

Basis of Our Country - Speaking of social safety nets, they're part of a so-called 'social contract', which comes from Locke's writings about government and society and economics. If you read anything, which you obviously haven't, about the founding of our country, you would know that they were concerned about those things, not because of religion, but because of the philosophical debates and writings about how a society is formed, whether or not an individual has a responsibility for only himself, or others. Some of the founding fathers were relgious, some were not, some were Christians, some were likely Aethists or Agnostics. Many were Deists. Several were Masons, which is full of pagan ideology and symbols. This country was not founded on religious beliefs, but one of it's tenets is in religious TOLERANCE. Remember that many immigrants were protestants fleeing persecution in Europe - quakers, episcopals (CofE), etc.

dcowboys99 read my blog
May 24, 2008 | 7:36 PM

These people wanted relgious freedom and tolerance and they were fortunate to have moved to a place that was thinking about how to make a government that was not about a King and not about a Religion, but about a Republic where individuals and property were not subservient to the will of a King or a Priest. A country that followed a set of laws rather than royal or religious edicts. As for the people making up the country, it's not just protestants from Europe. We had significant Asian influx, many as indentured servants who, under forced labor in the 1800's (moral?), helped build the railroad backbone of this country. We had Jewish immigrants, Africans, etc. Many were not Christian, and Christianity doesn't really have ownership to "morals". This country was founded on freedom from tyranny (relgious or government), responsibility, laws, property, and social contract.

I suppose, given your far superior intellect, you haven't overlooked things such as increase homelessness, increasing suicide rates, increase in percentage of violent crimes as compared to your "average", increased, ney, record home forclosures. You just conveniently forgot to mention it.
You, as do many others, wear blinders. You see only what you will and what is convenient to look at. You, as do the majority, look away from that which makes you uncomfortable. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just means you choose to put your own spin on it. As for our countries' religious foundations, I suppose "In God We Trust" on our currency was the result of a public opinion poll, not anything related to government policy.
Those who have eyes and won't see...Those with ears and won't hear. If you're happy with where you are in life and faith and all that, it's not my place to criticeze, judge, or any of that. It's my task to inspire your best. You obviously need a lot of attention, as your anger overshadows your intellegence.
