I know that it is important to preserve our history.  I know that the Governor's Mansion was a symbol to many people.  For some it really stood for something.  For me it stood for Rich Jerks running and ruining our country.

In our time of  "Terrorist" and President's who lie to the American people (I am looking at you too Clinton), and 5 dollar gas, and forcibly installing democracies, do Governor's really need mansions?  Don't we have something better to do with the money.  How many museums are there in Austin?  Here are a couple...

Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin Children's Museum, Austin Museum of Art - Downtown, Austin Museum of Art, Austin Nature & Science Center, Austin Steam Train Association, Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center,Blanton Museum of Art, Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Butridge Gallery at the Dougherty Arts Center, Capitol Visitors Center, Center for American History, UT Austin, Elisabet Ney Museum, French Legation Museum, George Washington Carver Museum, German-Texan Heritage Society, Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, Mexic-Arte Museum, Neill-Cochran House Museum, O. Henry Museum, Pioneer Farm, Republic of Texas Museum, Texas Capitol, Texas Folklife, Texas Memorial Museum, Texas Military Forces Museum, Texas Music Museum, Texas State Cemetery, Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, Westcave Preserve, Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve, Women & Their Work

I thought that government was supposed to reflect the people's will, and uphold their rights.  I thought our politicians were supposed to be people like us and understand the plight of the common man.  I don't have a Mansion.  I don't need a Mansion.  Nor does Rich, I mean Rick Perry, need a second Mansion.  I think that we should bulldoze the sucker down.  We could use the place as a public square for whipping politicians who lie, cheat, steal, bribe, bully, fake, their way into office.  Sounds like a good idea to me.

Or we could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to rebuild a useless building that only .001% of the population gives two farts about.

Am I way off base here or does anyone else care about giving over-privileged, perfect haired, silver tongued, "get on down the road", closet homosexual, a place kick up his $10,000 boots?

I care about the mansion, it is an important historical monument and a key part of my ethnic heritage as a native Texan.

Does Perry suck? Yes he does, very much so. But the governor's mansion is more important than the current resident. Sam Houston himself lived there, so it ought to be preserved based on that alone.

I stand corrected. .002% of the population gives two farts about the governors Mansion. I am not much of a history buff myself. Maybe that is why I don't think that the rebuild is high on my list of priorities.

I guess it wouldn't matter if the Alamo, the Capitol Building, and every OTHER historical landmark were destroyed, as well, huh?

unitqm, no offense, but your line of thinking is extremely enamored. mspurlin is absolutely correct - it's the value of the HISTORY.

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

I totally agree with Mspulin. Sorry Unitqm but you're flat out wrong on this one. While you may not care, history is important to our culture and civilization.

One correction though...

"Sam Houston himself lived there, so it ought to be preserved based on that alone."

Actually...no. The first resident of the Mansion was Texas' fifth governor, Elisha Pease. (as in Pease Park)

This is too rich! The ONE time I actually agree with Mike and I have to correct his Texas history.

I would like five minutes alone with the jerk that is going to cost me millions of dollars. He is in the same class as the guy that poisoned Treaty Oak. I don't care about his views...I don't care about his problems...I don't care about his issues. I just want 5 minutes. I'll bring my bat. It shouldn't be too hard to find someplace to store someone that is flat as my wallet is going to be.

I guess it is the word mansion that gets to me. Mathman brought up a real good point. I remember how I felt when I found out about Treaty Oak. That feeling of "Oh what a world we live in." I remember feeling betrayed and uneasy. But when I find out about some rich guy who's car gets towed I get all giddy inside. I guess that is why I get so upset that we are going to spend so much money on a mansion. Maybe we should get a rundown house on the east side to preserve that part of our history. We could fill it with all kinds of artifacts and historically relevant stuff like needles and crack pipes. I feel like Governor's Mansions are no longer relivent. They only preserve one side of history. The well off, well to do, and buttheads like Rick Perry. Which is why I say we have enough museums. Lets work on fixing the present not preserving our history... Isn't that what the Bob Bullock Museum is for anyway?

Actually...yes Sam Houston did in fact live at the mansion from 1859 to 1861. His 8th child was born there. via the mansion's website. Unitqm...I totally get what your saying, but some things should be preserved and this building is on of them.

Kind of funny everyone wanted Saddam Hussein because he was stealing his peoples money and building mansions all over his country but when the same thing happens here they have concerts and other fund raisers to rebuild those same kind of mansions for those same kind of politicians.

Odd there are no more stories on all the kids that were jerked away from their parents only because someone called CPS with a lie about them also.

Seems that was also the going rate when Saddam was in power and is still happening in communist China of which is rewarded for that by being giving the Olympics.

What will they reward the politicians with in our country for committing crimes against the same people they work for in this country I wonder?

Oh that is right, they will just raise taxes and say it is for the children as they pocket the money themselves.

You have a bat mathman???? Wow hold onto that because soon you will need a license to carry a bat along with a 10 day waiting period before you can purchase one.

It may even become illegal to own a bat unless you’re a registered professional baseball player the way the communist in control of our government are headed now days.

If Sam Houston were still alive he would have burned it down himself to keep it out of the hands of the communist living in it today I’m sure.

Maybe it was one of Sam Houston’s relatives that burned it down no telling but more than likely it was just some drugged out liberal street bum of which are common on every street corner in Austin.

great post. I love your writing. Not sure I agree that we shouldn't restore the governors mansion. Yeah, yeah. Rich people get treated special. People in politics screw over the rest of us. Life ain't fair, but that doesn't mean that we should punish future generations of some really cool history because we think that life ain't fair. :)
Just trying to take a positive outlook on things.

The government always rewrites history now day as a way to favor their own political agendas and then they use the rewrites in the government run public school systems to teach our children a history that never existed.

A good example would be what would really happen if Sam Houston Davy crocket and a whole slew of other real Americans were still alive today and they found a bunch of illegal aliens residing in Austin.

Americans would be coming from every state in the US to eradicate that problem unlike today where the public school systems and the American government are using trillions of our hard-earned tax dollars to give the illegal aliens a free ride and using propaganda to teach young Americans that is somehow a good thing.

In short, they are punishing future generations beyond our wildest dreams by doing that.

Along with using propaganda to help foreign countries maintain control of an oil cartel that will cost future generations about $20 a gallon for gas in the very near future by not lifting a drilling ban that has been in place for the last 27 years.

People see right thru politicians that claim drilling now will do no good at all when they just look at how stopping drilling 27 years ago is what really caused gas to be $4 a gallon today.

History never changes at all unless our children are taught a history that never existed to begin with and believe everything they hear without question.

Only people can make history, Not buildings or inanimate objects.

While I understand the mansion is important to a lot of people, I have to agree with Unitqm. I grew up in Daytona Beach, and watched the shoreline turn into condos and hotels. Its very sad, yes, but with more people comes expansion.
The mansion should be saved, but not at our expense. I lost my house in the hurricanes a couple of years ago...it had been there for about 60 years. Guess who helped me rebuild it? No one.
I dont know if it is the same for the mansion, but I know that when a new Pres. is elected, they redecorate the White House, again at our expense. Is there some line you can stand in to get million dollar handouts at the Health and Human Svcs. building? I must have overlooked it....
I dont know about you guys, but I consider myself a "Poor Sap" . I have 2 children, and a tax increase is food that is taken out of my childrens mouth. And for what? So the Gov. has a cozy place? I'm sure he can afford to rebuild it himself or even go out and ask for donations.
I think that if the politicians are going to understand how the "Average Joes" feel, they should live as we do.
Set the Gov. up in a nice double wide and call it a day. Let him worry about septic systems, noisy neighbors, the creepy old guy at the end of the road, trash not getting picked up on the days it is supposed to, etc. Let Perry apply with FEMA and take the same steps that are offered to us.
No disrespect to any Texans, but all good things must come to an end.
